MAYBE THIS TIME WHEN I PUT MY HAND IN THE FIRE...

From this Sunday's New York Times...

The immediate challenge for Mr. Bush, one senior foreign policy aide said, is to "convince the Israelis
it's in their long-term interest to deal with Arafat, no matter how reprehensible he may be."

I suppose the foreign policy aide would next like W to convince the Israelis that the sky is green, and the moon is made of cheese, because they are more likely to be true than the previous statement. If the United States is really interested in peace, it will speak the truth. Sure there are truths that the Sharon government may not want to swallow - Netzarim is not the same as Tel Aviv, isolated settlements are an impediment to peace. However, there are far more lies that it has to dispel to the rest of the world - first and foremost the insane notion that Arafat is in any way, shape, or form part of a solution. One can only hope that such a statement is part of a rope-a-dope strategy as the Bushies prepare to take out Saddam Hussein. Even so, any delay in the expulsion of Arafat will have a cost in both Israeli and Palestinian lives.
